Origins

“Aside from talking, we can learn from each other by just watching each other dance.”

-Loki

Origins is an artist book detailing an informal interview between a local breakdancer/bboy and I. Prior to this engagement, we bonded over our ethnicity, and engage in long-lasting conversations about the politics and culture of the dance whenever we meet up through practice or talking online.

I reached out to him to conduct an informal interview over dinner at a small Japanese restaurant. I recorded the interactions prior to the dinner and during the dinner, using my phone and notebook as the recording devices. during the interview, he discussed the intersecting elements of identity and dance as a way to socialize with others.

After the interview, I traveled to his city as he wanted to show the locations of interest, meet with his friend and practice with them.

Origins has been featured in the Design.Book.Arts artist book exhibition in October 2024 at the Arts Collaborative Medford as one of the artist books on exhibit.
